On Holy Tuesday morning Bp. Folda, joined by the priests of the diocese, will gather at the Cathedral to celebrate the Chrism Mass. This Mass manifests the unity of the priests with their bishop.
During the three days leading up to Easter, also known as the Sacred Triduum, Matins and Lauds are combined together in a special way, and with ancient rubrics, forming Tenebrae.
With this Mass, celebrated in the evening of the Thursday in Holy Week, the Church begins the sacred Easter Triduum and devotes herself to the remembrance of the Last Supper.
The Good Friday Liturgy will be at St. Paul's Newman Center on April 7th at 3PM. From the earliest times the Christians kept every Friday as a fast day (Duchesne, 228) and every Sunday as a feast day (Duchesne, 47); and the obvious reasons for those usages explain why Easter is the Sunday par excellence, and why the Friday which marks the anniversary of Christ’s Death came to be called the Great or the Holy or the Good Friday. The origin of the term Good is not clear. Some say it is from “God‘s Friday” (Gottes Freitag), so Hampson (op. cit. below); others maintain that it is from the German Gute Freitag, and not specially English. Sometimes, too, the day was called Long Friday by the Anglo-Saxons; so today in Denmark. There is, perhaps, no office in the whole liturgy so peculiar, so interesting, so composite, so dramatic as the office and ceremonial of Good Friday.
St. Paul's Newman Center will be joining St. Mary's for their celebration of the Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 8 at 8:30 PM. Sunday Morning we will have Easter Sunday Mass at the Newman Center at 9:30AM
