According to Dr. Theodore Marier in his book A Gregorian Chant Masterclass, the function of a liquescent neum is “to call attention to a consonant or diphthong that ends a syllable and that might otherwise be eclipsed or not sung at all.”
from the solemn tone Salve Regina

“You have to decipher a musical text through the application of the laws that govern the structure of its melody. You will master a chant melody by applying yourself to solfège. Solfège is one of the essential preparatory steps that must be taken to learn a chant. It’s not impossible. It is, in fact, quite simple. But you have to do it.”
